WHEN YOU STOP LEARNING, YOU STOP GROWING.

Kelly Bowen grew up in the hair industry; her mother, a stylist and salon owner, influenced her journey from the beginning. “I was that friend who did everyone’s hair and makeup for school dances and athletic events,” she remembers, “and I was having such a blast. I didn’t want it to end!”

Kelly started her career in 2004 at the esteemed Spalon Montage in the Twin Cities. She completed their apprentice program that year and became an Education Director in 2008, facilitating education and working with apprentices. Kelly was also a part of the Sebastian Design Team from 2008 to 2013. With mentorship from world-renowned artists such as The Doves, Nick Arrojo, Nick Berardi, Kevin Murphy, Phillip Wilson and Oribe, Kelly has styled hair backstage at New York Fashion Week and has been published in Behind the Chair and Beauty Launchpad. In 2009, she won the Gold Colorist Award in the US Wella Trendvision contest and proceeded to compete internationally in Berlin, Germany. “I love meeting new people, seeing new places and gathering inspiration,” Kelly shares. Her inspiration comes from all over: the red carpet, other hairdressers and artists and her clients, as well the blogs, fashionistas and product junkies who help set trends and push boundaries. “Most of all,” she adds, “I love being an artist! First and foremost, that’s who I am, and using hair as my medium I am able to be an architect, a painter, a sculptor and a designer every day!”

Kelly has always aspired to become an educator. Motivated by the education directors at her salon who helped her hone her craft, as well as top stylists and educators who have been mentors, she decided to join Moroccanoil because of Co-founder Carmen Tal’s mission for the brand—authenticity, effectiveness and ease of use. “I’m drawn to the integrity and passion of the company, and everyone who is a part of it,” she says. “The Moroccanoil image is the core of who I am as an artist, as my passion is creating healthy, beautiful hair that is sophisticated and effortless.”
